How To Do A Front Squat or Goblet Squat with Dumbbells

Front squats are an excellent compound lift (recruits more muscle groups than isolated movements) to target your quads, hamstrings, glutes, core and upper back. The main thing with performing front squats is to make sure you are performing them correctly to get the most out of the movement because the load is on the front of the body instead of the back of the body (as it is with back squats) you will have to use more of your back and abs in order to keep your chest upright so that the weight does not pull your forward.

A few tips from the video to help you perform front squats properly and with the most efficiency:

  • Make sure to brace your core before lowering down to squat so you do not put too much weight in your low back
  • Keep your chest upright and elbows high (when your chest starts to come forward it means you need to squeeze your upper back and abs to stay upright
  • If it is uncomfortable to hold the dumbbell upright (as in the video) you can also hold the dumbbell horizontally so that you are holding each end of the dumbbell in one hand
  • Make sure when you come out of the squat you are pushing through your heels
